A Brief History of Fraser Island
Fraser Island is located just south of the Great Barrier Reef.
Known for thousands of years as K'gari or Paradise.
Fraser Island is about 120 km long and ranges between 22 km at its widest point to 5 km wide.
Captain James Cook first noted the island in 1770. He presumed it to be part of the mainland and named it the Great Sandy Peninsula.
Matthew Flinders came ashore over 200 years ago at Sandy Cape.
Captain William Edwardson navigated the passage from Tin Can Bay to Hervey Bay determining that the Great Sandy Peninsula was an island.
A new name was given to the island in 1836 after the survivors of a shipwreck of the 'Stirling Castle' found their way ashore and the death of Captain Fraser.
In 1863 the first Kauri logs were punted to the mills in Maryborough and Dundathu.
Red Satinay was used around the world including sidings on the Suez Canal and docks in London. It was also used locally on the Urangan Jetty, with the bark
left intact for protection against marine borers.
'Marloo' was shipwrecked on Orchid Beach in 1914.
'Maheno' beached north of Happy Valley in 1935.
A fine layer of decomposing vegetation seals the basins formed by the sand dunes and creates its many perched lakes, some as much as 70 metres above
sea level.

How to get to 'Bronzewing'
|
DRIVING
If you are coming in your own 4WD vehicle, you will need to obtain an access permit from Queensland National Parks. This can be done online
at www.epa.qld.gov.au
If you need to hire a vehicle, this can be done in
Brisbane Four Wheel Drive
Rainbow Beach Rainbow Beach 4WD Hire
Hervey Bay Hervey Bay 4WD Hire
Via Rainbow Beach you do not have to book the vehicle ferry, as it goes backwards and forwards all day from 6am to 5pm. It is a 15
minute crossing and will take approximately 1 hour to reach Happy Valley. This is a beach drive.
If coming from Rainbow Beach it is important to reach the island 1 hour either side of LOW tide.
Tide times at www.bom.gov.au. Choose 'Waddy Point' from
the 'Select Location' drop down box and click Submit.
Via Hervey Bay there are two loading points: River Heads which takes you to Kingfisher Bay or Wangoolba Creek, and Urangan Harbour which
takes you to Moon Point. Bookings for these ferries is essential.
The recommended route is to take the ferry from River Heads to Wangoolba Creek. This trip takes approx. 30 minutes. Then a 1 hour drive across the island and 30-45
minutes up the beach.
From Kingfisher Bay it is a 45 minute trip on the ferry, a 1 hour drive across the island and 20-30 minutes minutes up the beach.
From Moon Point, the drive across the island is 1hour 30 mintues straight into Happy Valley.
It is best to make your ferry bookings as close to LOW tide as possible, remembering that the ferry lands on the western side of the island and the tide on the eastern
side is 1 hour earlier.

Legend of the Coloured Sands
There are 72 colours of sands to be found along the Fraser Coast.
The Aboriginal legend of the coloured sands is as old as time.
It is told that, back in Dreamtime, there lived along the banks of a river a beautiful maiden called Murrawar, who fell in love with the Rainbow, who came to visit her every
morning.
One day, Burwilla, a very bad man from a distant tribe, stole Murrawar for his slave wife, beating her cruelly and making her do all the work, while he sat in the shade
admiring his killing boomerang.
This boomerang was bigger than the biggest tree and full of evil spirit.
One day Murrawar ran away, and as she hurried along the beach, she looked back and saw Burwilla's boomerang coming to kill her. Calling out for help, she fell to the
ground, too frightened to run.
Suddenly, she heard a loud noise in the sky and saw her faithful Rainbow, they met with a roar like thunder, killing the boomerang instantly and shattering the
Rainbow into many small pieces.
The poor sick and shattered Rainbow lay on the beach to die, and is still there with all its colours along the beach.
